The four numbers
Write these down before you make the call.
- What the van is worth repaired and running
- The full repair quote, parts and labour
- What else is likely to need doing in the next twelve months
- What the van is worth right now, as it stands
The rule of thumb
If the repair bill plus expected near-term costs comes to more than about half of the repaired value, repairing rarely pays — especially on a high-mileage vehicle where the next fault is not far away.
Faults that usually end it
On an older, high-mileage vehicle these repairs typically exceed the value.
- Head gasket failure or a seized engine
- Automatic gearbox replacement
- Structural corrosion
- DPF and emissions system replacement on a high-mileage diesel
- Accident damage requiring panel and structural work
Do not forget the standing costs
A van waiting for a decision still costs money: tax, insurance, storage and depreciation. Deciding quickly is usually worth more than deciding perfectly.
Common questions
- Can you tell me what mine is worth?
- Yes — complete the valuation form with the faults and photos and we will come back with a no-obligation offer.
- Should I get it diagnosed first?
- It helps, but it is not required. Describe the symptoms and we will price around them.
